Think XR is just for gaming? Worried it will turn us all into headset-sporting zombies? You've got it all wrong. Join us as we debunk 4 common XR myths.

Just like any area of innovation, there have always been various misconceptions about the tech industry. And extended reality (XR) is one branch of technology that has often fallen victim to public scepticism. However, we think it's about time that all changed.

We want to clear up many myths, falsities and fairy tales surrounding XR and its associated use cases. So without further ado, let's get out our magnifying glasses and debunk some XR myths.

Myth 1: XR is only for gaming and entertainment

The truth is XR has come a long way since its clunky infancy in the 90s. But due to the nature of its introduction into popular culture, XR has long been synonymous with its shaky beginnings in the gaming industry.

Virtual reality (VR) in particular has a reputation for being purely for leisure and entertainment. Something teens escape into in the darkness of their bedrooms.

And although there are some incredible entertainment-focused VR products on the market, this only begins to scratch the surface of some of the innovative capabilities of XR products.

XR technology has the potential to transform how we work, learn and interact with the world around us.

For instance, XR can be used for training purposes, enabling individuals to learn in a simulated environment that's safe, cost-effective and customisable. With VR, for example, trainees can immerse themselves in a virtual world and practice handling complex machinery or performing dangerous procedures without any risk.

This use case has been particularly fruitful in industries like manufacturing, aerospace and healthcare.

    Myth 2: XR isn't accessible

Another pervasive myth about XR technology is that it's not accessible to the "average person" and is only meant for tech-savvy individuals.

While it's true that XR devices are powerful – and many are aimed at industrial users – there are many less intimidating options available. These simple XR entry points make the technology accessible to beginners and those who may not be as literate when it comes to new tech.

In fact, many augmented reality (AR) apps can be downloaded and used on a smartphone or tablet – devices that most people already own and are familiar with.

Not only that but XR hardware can be easily mastered with a little bit of training and explanation. XR isn't rocket science – devices are, by and large, designed to be user-friendly and easy to grasp.

Think you need a PhD to use an XR headset? Think again.

Myth 3: XR will further isolate people and workforces

Another myth that has been circulating about XR technology is that it can alienate and isolate users, creating a disconnect from the real world. However, this couldn't be further from the truth.

XR devices can actually facilitate remote collaboration, bringing people together across different locations and allowing them to work together in a more immersive and interactive way than ever before.

Using XR headsets, teams can work together as if they were in the same room – even if they're on opposite sides of the globe. With features like shared virtual whiteboards and "see-what-I-see" video streaming, XR technology can actually enhance collaboration and help to break down geographical barriers, rather than isolating users.

Myth 4: XR has no place in business

    Now this one really hurts.

But, fear not, we're going to debunk this one, once and for all.

At Expand Reality, we are actively working to increase the operational efficiency of businesses through the use of XR technology. We offer a range of solutions that cater to the unique needs of different industries.

For example, with an assisted reality headset and video collaboration software, experts can provide real-time guidance to workers in the field, reducing downtime and increasing productivity.

Or how about virtual meetings? With mixed reality headsets, such as the
Microsoft HoloLens 2, remote workers can mingle with their colleagues in cyberspace – sharing ideas, manipulating 3D assets and collaborating using digital whiteboards.

By leveraging the power of XR technology, we are helping businesses to streamline their operations, improve collaboration and communication, and ultimately achieve greater success.

    Consider these myths debunked

So, there you have it – just a few of the myths surrounding XR officially debunked.

    (You're very welcome.)

The truth is that as more and more businesses continue to adopt XR solutions, the benefits and value they offer will no longer be deniable. There'll just be a few former sceptics that have a lot of catching up to do.

If you ask us, it's best to be three steps ahead than a single step behind.
