After some big reveals from the likes of Apple and Meta, we're looking at a few XR devices that are set to be released in the coming months. Get excited!

2023 looks to be a landmark year for new releases and state-of-the-art innovation in the world of extended reality (XR). With that in mind, we've scoured through the news channels to bring you the latest on upcoming XR devices that everyone should know about.

    What are the headline releases?

XR is making waves in the worlds of business and entertainment. And this year has seen several big-name manufacturers announce new devices in an attempt to snatch a slice of the pie.

Of course, Apple has already made headlines after announcing the Vision Pro at its WWDC event in early June. In the not-so-distant future, we should also see the launch of Sony's PSVR 2 and Meta's Quest 3.

It looks to be an exciting few months for XR. Let's take a look at some of the hardware in more detail.

    Apple Vision Pro

Although its official release date is still a little hazy, it goes without saying that we have to include the Vision Pro in our list. The upcoming device from Apple has been long-awaited by many and kept tightly under wraps by its developers.

The Vision Pro has made good use of the many years it has spent in development, with Apple promising it will herald a "new era in spatial computing". The device, which will work to seamlessly integrate digital content into the world around you, is aimed at individuals and professionals as a kind of XR-enhanced Mac or digital PA.

The specs we know so far are pretty impressive. It will feature micro-OLED displays that surpass 4K resolution for each eye, as well as an Ambient Spatial Audio system that adapts to the environment around it.

Apple has spoken publicly about its aim to expand the ecosystem surrounding XR during the development of the Vision Pro. It will be interesting to see how this new headset may influence other hardware in the future.

The launch date isn't necessarily set in stone but the device already has a large following. During the annual WWDC, Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, showcased the Vision Pro and promised it would launch in the near future.

    Meta Quest 3

Following on from the huge success of its predecessor, the Quest 3 was announced back in June of this year and looks likely to be launched at Meta's Connect event in late September.

The new mixed reality (MR) headset will sport a trimmed-down, more wearable design – 40% slimmer than the Quest 2. But less is more, it seems, as the device will also boast a powerful next-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon Chipset. This processor is expected to deliver twice the graphical performance of the Quest 2.

The focus for this device remains firmly in the entertainment industry. However, the Quest 3 also has the potential to penetrate the enterprise market, where brands are keen to utilise MR for immersive training delivery.

The 128GB version of the product is set to retail at around £499 and should be an excellent option for personal use.

    DPVR P2

Ranked as the second-largest XR headset brand in China, DPVR specialises in virtual reality (VR) device design and manufacturing. The brand has just announced the upcoming launch of its latest project, the DPVR P2.

DPVR is developing its VR offerings to enterprises and the P2 looks to be designed specifically for business use. DPVR itself has claimed that its new headset aims to "revolutionise the way businesses, schools and medical institutions harness the power of immersive technology".

The company touts several potential applications for the hardware, including VR training and immersive education.

AjnaLens: AjnaXR Pro and AjnaXR SE

Indian startup AjnaLens has recently launched two headsets: the AjnaXR Pro and AjnaXR SE. Both are designed for industrial use and come with an impressive list of specifications.

The devices run on the latest Qualcomm XR2+ Gen 1 chipset, feature eight gigabytes of RAM and come with up to 256 gigabytes of onboard storage. Both are equipped with sensors that support six degrees of freedom tracking, inside-out tracking and hand tracking. They also boast two 16-megapixel RGB cameras with ultra-low-latency passthrough support.

    Pico 5

If the rumours are true, VR company Pico is set to release the successor to its popular Pico 4 headset within the next 12 months.

It makes sense that Pico would want to release a newer version of its device. The Pico 4 runs on the older Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chip, while its main competitor, the Quest 3, will use the faster, next-generation XR2+.

The headset would likely keep many of the perks of its previous design, such as lightness and intuitive navigation. Pico has a large following of fans who are eagerly awaiting confirmation of the updated device.

Samsung and Google's XR headset: "Project Moohan"

Expected to launch around the summer of next year, Samsung's latest XR device has been kept tightly under wraps. However, an apparent leak has released some possible news on the device.

The leak was first reported by Chinese publication VRTUOLUO (though the post has since been deleted). The article revealed images of a supposed prototype for the upcoming device, showing four tracking cameras, dual RGB cameras and a depth sensor.

It's believed that the headset will be a standalone device that can be navigated using hand and eye tracking technologies.

Rumours say that the device has suffered a recent delay after the Vision Pro's specs were released. In any case, Samsung's "Metaverse device" looks likely to be in high demand upon its release.

    Somnium VR1

First announced at the end of 2021, Somnium VR1 is being developed alongside thriving tech company VRgineers, which specialises in high-end XR solutions for enterprise.

The headset has a modular and lightweight design with four customisable anchor points. Users can download 3D printable extensions directly from Sonium. These extensions can then be added to the headset, making for a more versatile device.

Somnium has assured buyers of some pretty high-end specifications and features, such as a 125x100 degree field of view and 210+ nits of brightness.

Eager customers won't have to wait long as the headset has a pledged launch date of 2023.
